Dozens of passengers were injured on an Air Canada flight on its way from Canada to Australia on Thursday due to severe turbulence.

About 35 passengers are believed to have been injured by what Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick described to USA TODAY as “un-forecasted and sudden turbulence.”

Flight AC33, which was traveling from Vancouver to Sydney, Australia, was diverted to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport Thursday morning.

Fitzpatrick said in a statement that the Boeing 777-200 plane was about two hours past Hawaii when it hit “severe clear air” turbulence.

Of the 269 passengers on the flight, Fitzpatrick said that 35 of them “sustained minor injuries.”

“Our first priority is always the safety of our flights, passengers and crew and as a precaution, medical personnel are on standby to assist passengers in Honolulu,” Fitzpatrick said. “We are currently making arrangements for the passengers including hotel accommodations and meals in Honolulu, as well as options for resumption of the flight.”
